Townsville Preview

Hi Everyone,

We’re approaching the halfway mark in the Supercars championship by heading north for the Townsville 400 this weekend! It’s one of my favourite tracks. Even though it’s a street track, I’d describe it as more of a combination of the traditional Adelaide-style street track and Albert Park grand prix circuits. It’s a bit of a hybrid of flowing corners and ninety degree corners and big kerbs.

I qualified on the front row for the first time ever in a Supercar at Townsville in my rookie year in 2014, and made my first Top 10 shootout appearance that same year. I’ve also won there in Dunlop Super2 and Carrera Cup, but the last couple of years I’ve had a few DNFs, so I’m certainly looking to turn my Townsville luck back around.

I scored my first podium of the year and my first with BJR at the recent round in Darwin, which was a great reward for all the hard work the team has put in this year.

A trouble-free round has also meant a pretty smooth turnaround for the crew.

We’ve got some more new bits on my car which we will trial in Friday practice.

I think it will be a very interesting event. We’ve graded it as one of the harder places on tyres, so we could see more of the tyre issues that surfaced at Phillip Island earlier in the season. The circuit layout is hard on the left rear tyre because there’s a lot of long loaded corners where we are at 100% throttle and sliding the cars.

I’m preparing to have to adjust the way that I drive the car to prevent any tyre failures. It’s cool to have a new sponsor, McHitch, on the livery of Car 8 for this event. They are a family run business, and BJR are a family run team so there is a good synergy there.

Since Darwin I’ve had a bit of a break. I’ve spent some quality time at home, making sure the dogs are behaving. Nelson has somehow mastered the art of removing a plant out of the pot without also removing the soil, so he can eat it. Bunnings are getting their money’s worth out of me with replacement plants!

It’s also been announced recently that Macauley Jones will co-drive with me in the endurance races. He’s doing a solid job in the Dunlop Super2 series, and I look forward to watching him race in Townsville as well this weekend.
