Sydney Motorsport Park Preview

We head to Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend for the final hit out before the endurance season commences.
Sydney Motorsport Park (SMP) is a track I really like. I had my first individual podium result there in 2014; finishing second when Scotty McLaughlin and I drag raced to the finish line!

I think we’re in for another interesting weekend, particularly with the soft tyre on quite an abrasive surface. SMP is very hard on tyres and normally we see a lot of degradation here.
Qualifying will be key here. You typically only get one lap to do a quick time on each set of tyres because the degradation is so high.
During the races the job is to be mindful not to lean on them too hard or too early, or you can find yourself with bigger issues towards the end of the race.

It’s good to be representing a new sponsor on Car 8 in ACDelco this weekend. I think the metallic blue livery will look really good on the track.
We’re going to give my enduro co-driver Macauley Jones some more laps in my car during Friday’s practice. Obviously he didn’t get much of an opportunity at Queensland Raceway with the engine failure, and at Winton the co-driver session was wet, so we want to get him comfortable and refine his seating position. He’s on double duties this weekend, running in the Dunlop Super2 series as well so the more laps the better for the young guy.
Since the last round at Ipswich I went to Bali with one of my sponsors Timken. It was a great four-day getaway for a conference Timken were presenting at, and a nice escape from Melbourne’s winter weather.
I also raced in the City of Melbourne titles go kart race. There was a huge turnout, with 50 entries in my class alone! I threw myself in the deep end, running a kart and an engine package I’d never used before. I had to learn quickly from that first practice session, but I ran inside the top four all weekend so that was cool.

I enjoy the challenge of driving different things, I feel it gives me a broader knowledge and helps me adapt to changing race conditions better. Hopefully the karting has helped me prepare for this weekend, especially as the Eastern Creek track changes so much.
On the Monday after the Red Rooster Sydney SuperSprint we have a sponsor ride day. It’s always fun to scare lots of sponsors and give them a cool memory to remember! (It’d be awesome if we also had a trophy or two to show off… fingers crossed!)
